1. What happens at the very end of Act I, Scene One? What is the setting of the start of Act I, Scene two?
Setting: Kitchen of the Younger's family
At the end of Act I, Scene two, Walter was pretty upset that the money wasn't used for the investment for his future liquor store, instead for Mama's dream house with a garden. He also discovers that his wife, Ruth is pregnant with another baby. Beneatha is astonished and sarcastically she thought 'where was the baby going to live, on the roof'. That only brought Ruth more depressed. Ruth stands up and bravely said how she put a 5 dollar down payment for the abortion. Walter was shocked that she even did that in the beginning. Mama and her religious self told Walter to be a man and to stand up for his unborn child. Mama starts to say how God gave them life and how Ruth is going to destroy the child. Walter just walks out with out a word. "You are a disgrace to your father's memory.."

The smell is from what Beneatha is using to kill the roaches. He says that the roaches are harmless and they don't do anything to her. Beneatha just starts to yell back.
